This week’s blog post is short and simple, but covers a very important topic that can set people up for failure when trying to get a resolution for their injury.
There are really on two types of doctors out there:
- A doctor that tells you what you WANT to hear.
- A doctor that tells you what you NEED to hear.
Having the right doctor is the key factor in getting your injury fully fixed and returning back to living a pain free life.
A doctor who only tells you what you want to here can prove to be disastrous. These type of doctors are focused on keeping you happy and don’t want to lose you as client.
They tend to down play the severity of the injury and end up not really putting any restrictions on the activities that got you there in the first place.
The doctor is so worried that if they say the wrong thing, such as stop doing the activity that you love that you will just walk right out the door.
They are afraid to be honest about your current state and the fact that your activity is the main culprit in why you are hurt.
Essentially they say all the things you want to hear, that your injury really isn’t a big deal. You can keep doing every activity that you want and that the solution will be simple.
On the surface it may sound like a pretty good situation. Now you can keep doing all the dumb stuff that got you into the injury in the first place and the solution to the injury will be simple and quick.
If you truly believe that then please allow me to sell you some of my magical beans as well!
I have come across as being a little too harsh and downright honest. In the long run wouldn’t you want a doctor who is going to be completely honest with you?
The truth definitely can hurt, but at the end of the day it is what you really need to hear.
The hard reality goes like this…
Yes you are injured and it is a big deal. The solution to fixing that injury is going to take some time, cost a good amount of money and wont be the easiest.
During that time you are going to have to cut back on your activity/training/working out in order to let your body effectively heal.
It will be frustrating and you might feel like you will lose it on your friends/family because you lost the outlet to get rid of your stress.
The crazy part is that taking it easy for a few weeks to get your injury fixed really isn’t a big deal in the grand scheme of things.
Trust me you wont lose time on your runs, lose your gains or go back into a pile of blob!
Imagine if the injury got so bad and you weren’t able to do anything, or the pain was so bad it kept you from sleeping at night?
Now that would definitely suck!
In closing, make sure you choose the doctor who will be honest and tell you what you need to hear.
It will definitely be a hard pill to swallow, but in the long run it is what you truly need.
